The vandalism at Macedonia Baptist Church is most unfortunate and the racist nature of the episode makes it even more significant.
Everyone should be concerned. This shouldn't be considered an isolated, mischievous act, rather it is a sign much more work remains to be done in learning to live together in peace.
The damaged wall has been repaired, but the emotional wound remains unhealed.
The Capital Area Council of Churches is saddened such an episode ever occurred and stands with the members of that congregation. We also stand with those who work to eliminate the attitudes that lead to such acts.
We cannot assume the problem of racism lies elsewhere; it is a problem close to home and we all have the responsibility to respond.
