Anyone who still believes Washington works in the best interest of the general public is living in a political cocoon. Politics has been the sand that has ground the gears of the democratic process to a glacial pace and an inevitable total freeze.
George Washington warned about the dangers of political parties. Oh, he was so right!
Politicians dread deadlock but are unable to address it. Our biggest problems have no popular solutions. Politicians are afraid to depart from party policy if they want to win re-election.
The fix is obvious but a very high hurdle: Term limits. Can you imagine the opposition to any change that reduced the power of politicians and lobbyists? Any effort to reduce Washington's financial rewards derived from our political system will be lobbied with great intensity.
The public revolt will have to be grassroots. An assault by the electorate will require the enlistment of enlightened politicians and lawyers who can devise a strategy to put term limits on the ballot.
Without term limits our democracy is unlikely, to survive. The sooner Americans believe so, the better our chances for a more responsible government.
