Letter: Children learn by good examples

Congratulation to James Nealon and his letter ("The problem is our violent nature," Jan. 10). It was filled with truth regarding our violent nature. Our world is filled with violence, and it continues to increase.

As Mr. Nealon said, "We are a disaster reactive society. We only react to issues when they have become a disaster."

And how do we react?

We spend time and money on finding and imprisoning the guilty person, who is usually released and often commits a crime again. That's like calling the doctor, saying you don't feel well and getting a prescription over the phone. The doctor needs to see you, find the cause of the illness and treat accordingly. Band-Aids may help temporarily, but they don't treat or eliminate the cause.

As Mr. Nealon said, "We are skimming over the real problem, which is the violent nature of people."

Let's spend more time with our children; let's limit the television, video game and texting time. Let's choose the right programs for our children to watch.

Watch "Touched By An Angel," which focuses on correcting a person's attitude problem before disaster strikes. And let's teach what the Bible tells us in both Matthew 22:34-40 and Luke 10:25-28 about "The Greatest Commandment."

When experts in religious law asked Jesus what they should do to inherit eternal life, Jesus made it clear to love the Lord with all your heart, soul, strength and mind and to love your neighbor as yourself.

We should not only teach our children, but also look into the mirror and ask ourselves, "Are we setting the proper examples and footprints for our family, friends, co-workers and loved ones to follow?"
