Letter: Gender equality appeal deceitful

I was deeply disturbed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo's tirade on gender discrimination in his State of the State address. Through it, he joins the progressive left in a strategy of "divide through derision" and "offer yourself as salvation."

I don't hate, dislike, feel superior toward or have any need to dominate women. I don't have a vision of God that I think they should obey. But I don't agree with some of the policies that the governor put forth in the name of equality:

Equalization through more lawsuits will not provide a net benefit. Gains will go to those who work the system, hire the more aggressive attorney, luck out with the most sympathetic jury, etc. Businesses will pay, whether at fault, lawyers will get wealthy, and true victims with smaller claims may not be well represented. A coherent definition of discrimination or harassment and a panel of individuals trained for consistent application would be better than the courts.

Any person involved in a conception will improve their own life if they then dedicate themselves to the well-being of the child who results from that conception. I realize this is a deeply personal choice and stand by any woman's right to a first trimester abortion. But, with the exception of an imminent threat to the mom's life, I cannot understand how any doctor that takes an oath to "do no harm" can perform, authorize or even tolerate the injection of saline solution into a healthy fetus to provide assurance the fetus will have no life signs when it is removed from the womb.

Governor Cuomo chanted, "Her body, her choice." I agree, but the object of a second-trimester abortion has different genetic material than "her body," has a different heartbeat and, when poked with a needle, has a different nervous system that reports the signal to a different brain.

I hope the women of this state will see through the governor's deceitful appeal.
