The more I read John Krohn's commentary, "Fracking devolves into political theater," Jan. 15, the more my incredulity mounted.
Krohn was listed as communications director of Energy in Depth. It should be noted that Energy in Depth is a pro-oil and gas front group created by the Independent Petroleum Association of America and the American Petroleum Institute with funding from industry groups including BP, Shell, Chevron and Halliburton.
In his piece, Krohn mentions "a secret review from Gov. Andrew Cuomo's health secretary" and goes on to give partial sentence quotes from this alleged "secret review" striving to prove that no health risks exist from air emissions, water contamination and radioactive material due to fracking.
Yes, fracking is like walking through a rose garden in June.
Krohn's conclusions are curious. I keep reading of once arable, now unusable, land; poisoned ponds; dead cows and sheep; polluted rivers and lakes; torn-up roads; and critically diminished fresh water supplies, not to mention sick and dying human beings.
Oil and gas people talk of the riches to be made but never bring up shrunken land values for the property owners as well as neighbors' lands or the subsequently vanishing local tax revenues.
In our world of global climate change and exploding population, fracking corruption could last for generations. Let's invest in sustainable energy — solar, wind and hydroelectric.
