Gov. Andrew Cuomo showed his commitment to gun control by signing the nation's strongest gun control bill after it was rushed through the Legislature. He claimed the Newtown, Conn., attack caused the Legislature to act and the bill was "common sense" if we are going to protect the public, especially our children. I do not believe this hastily passed law will protect us or our children.
Meanwhile, Gov. Cuomo showed he is clearly not in favor of protecting children through abortion control. During his State of the State address, he framed proposed changes in abortion law through the Reproductive Health Act as a "women's equality" issue, but the Democrats for Life of America rightly have a different perspective. The group states "the abortion language would allow late term abortions, allow non-doctors to perform abortions and supersede any reasonable restrictions such as parental notification." As a teacher, I know a student cannot get an aspirin without parental permission, and I can't show an R-rated movie to my class without a permission slip.
Something doesn't seem right here, and it is Gov. Cuomo. It is truly shocking and tragic that a couple of extra months in the womb can fundamentally change his desire to protect our most precious gift: our children.
