Letter: Allow architect inside St. Pat's

Citizens for St. Patrick's was delighted with the recent editorial "St. Pat's deserves a second opinion," July 23.

We have been denied our request to give an independent architect, John Waite, access to the St. Patrick's Church site for a second assessment. Nigro Companies, Golub Corp. and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany have all stated they would put aside the plan to tear down the church for a new Price Chopper if another, viable option is found. Without an independent assessment, how will that happen?

As the editorial stated, "We won't have a better sense of things unless the diocese lets Mr. Waite inside the church, and even then the city would have multiple opinions to weigh. Yet how sad it would be to never know."

The church is the fabric of our city, a local landmark. As the editorial stated, "For more than 120 years, St. Patrick's Church has defined Watervliet's skyline."

Citizens for St. Patrick's wants to preserve this building. We sincerely hope the Watervliet City Council doesn't make any final decisions until all possibilities have been explored.
