Letter: No reason to own automatic guns

I always believed there was no reason anyone other than military or police should have automatic weapons. Now, thanks to Bill Federman ("Animal attacks demand automatic weapons" Jan. 18), I understand.

Mr. Federman explains that I (or my wife) should be prepared in case a rabid bobcat attacks me in my garage or, even worse, a tiger or water buffalo. I haven't seen too many of any of this wildlife in Clifton Park, but I guess you never know.

With this kind of mentality on the part of gun supporters, I think I would be better off protected from them than the vicious animals. It is because of that kind of twisted or strained reasoning that our nation and state cannot have reasonable dialogue on the gun control issue. The reality is there are no logical reasons why automatic weapons or high-capacity magazines can be justified for citizens or true sportsmen.
