Letter: Coming to grips with Legislature

Upon reading the editorial "Get a grip, Mr. McLaughlin," Feb. 7, regarding Mr. McLaughlin's loss of temper and poor choice of words, I laughed out loud.

Not because I think the assemblyman didn't deserve a critique of his conduct, but rather because of your adjudication and relegation of him to the category of "useless."

Are you serious? Ours is one of the most dysfunctional state Legislatures in the country.

Members of this group are convicted of criminal activity on a regular basis. It's also this group that fails to change our incumbent-slanted election laws, hasn't done enough to stem out-of-control taxes or irresponsible spending and has a chronic inability to lead.

Further, I encourage you to use as much editorial space on an investigative report into the decades-long mismanagement of our tax dollars on Medicaid. I then encourage you to elaborate on how useful that has been to our state.

You've crucified Mr. McLaughlin as though he were a criminal in a church choir.

Get a grip, indeed.

JOHN T. OLIVER
