Letter: Lawmaker voiced what others think

Your scathing reprimand of Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin ("Get a grip, Mr. McLaughlin," Feb. 7) was uncalled for. He was only telling the truth, but to many it may have been politically incorrect.

When I hear many of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's speeches, I feel as if he is saying "my way or watch out." What a shame.

One can be strong without being obnoxious. Mr. McLaughlin just voiced what many were thinking but didn't have the platform, as do the politicians and editorial boards.

When I listen to President Barack Obama's comments regarding Republicans, I get the same feeling. I am not a Republican, and I believe in telling it like it is.

Dozens of gun laws already are on the books, yet this debate gives the editorial boards the chance to pound their chests when more are sought.

I do believe some among us wish to turn this country into a dictatorship; read between some of the lines or listen between the lines and you shall hear.

Mr. McLaughlin was exercising free speech. It's your editorial board that should get a grip.
