Letter: Stop hemorrhaging money at SUNY

University at Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering is to be congratulated for its vision in creating a seamless educational pipeline for the 160 students at Tech Valley High School ("Tech Valley High moving up," Feb. 14). These students now will join the approximately 200 students on the NanoCollege campus, pursuing the world's first comprehensive baccalaureate degrees in nanoscale science and engineering.

The thousands being directly invested in these young people is exemplary, particularly in these times when, in the words of Chancellor Nancy Zimpher, SUNY is "hemorrhaging money" ("We are hemorrhaging money," Feb. 12), often to the detriment of the more than 12,000 undergraduates at the University at Albany.

Will New York and Gov. Andrew Cuomo come to their senses and stanch the hemorrhage so that more students have opportunity within reach?
