Letter: Don't dismiss those in nursing homes

As a member of the Albany County Legislature, County Executive Dan McCoy fought to keep the Albany County Nursing Home open.

Standing in front of residents and families at the facility, he stated it would remain open and he would take care of them as Albany County had taken care of his father.

Mr. McCoy stated that then-County Executive Mike Breslin was wrong in his figures and we needed the entire continuum of care. He said he would work with the nursing home's Core Family Council and residents to build a new home.

Fast forward a couple years. Mr. McCoy is trying his hardest to sell the nursing home, and residents, to Upstate Services Group. He said to the current County Legislature, there were no other bidders or takers to the proposal seeking a private management team. We now know that is not the case.

Mr. McCoy is not forthcoming in his dealings with the Legislature, the Family Council or the taxpayers. While much has been spent in the last decade on other county projects with hardly as much scrutiny, we still seem to want to throw away the most vulnerable of our population.
