Recent news of Reader's Digest going heavily into debt should come as no surprise to those still loyal to print media. Both newspapers and magazines have to deal with increasing costs, along with reduced advertising revenues and declining readership due to competition from the Internet and other information sources. The growing population of immigrants supports their own newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations.
We are fortunate to live in one of the few free societies, with a wealth of information sources available. Let us hope newspapers and magazines, including our own Times Union, will continue to survive as a valuable information source for citizens to access.
Patronize those businesses that advertise in your favorite newspaper and magazine. Their advertisements help cover costs.
