Modest proposals for mail delivery

Please, Mr. Postmaster, don't let snail mail be ended because of high costs. I am addicted and dependent on getting and paying bills by mail. I question Internet security and prefer mail service. May I suggest two ways to significantly reduce delivery costs?

I'm sure most snail mail devotees would be content to get mail every other day. I would suggest a new delivery schedule of Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for half of us; Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for the other half. Each carrier would alternately service two neighborhoods, thus requiring half as many carriers and delivery vehicles.

Meanwhile, new delivery vehicles could be twice as energy efficient, lowering fuel costs. A battery-operated hybrid vehicle excels in stop-and-go service.

Far be it for me to suggest wages and benefits be negotiated for postal workers that are equivalent to other hard-working Americans, but Americans do hope this is being tried.
