Don't let religion influence our laws

Bishop Howard Hubbard of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany and other Catholic bishops recently met with Gov. Andrew Cuomo to express their concerns regarding his push to enact legislation they fear would increase abortions in the state ("Bishops relay abortion concerns to governor," March 20).

Bishop Hubbard said the Catholic Church has a teaching on abortion and same-sex marriage, and he would not be tremendously happy about anything the governor proposes contrary to the teachings of the church.

I urge Gov. Cuomo to also meet with Protestant ministers, Jewish rabbis, and nonbelievers to find out whether the teachings of non-Catholic religions are consistent with or contrary to the teachings of the Roman Catholic bishops with whom he did meet.

We need more "separation of church and state" and less "government according to the teachings of different religions that are inconsistent with each other."
