Even if every National Rifle Association member in the United States converges on Albany, our governor shouldn't back down from the new gun law. The NRA is out of line.
The NRA seemingly doesn't care about the mass murder of our schoolchildren using weapons designed for mass killings. The NRA seemingly doesn't care about having safe communities and a police force that can protect our cities without encountering military-style assault weapons.
All the NRA cares about is its single-minded obsession of guaranteeing the right to own every type of weapon ever invented, regardless of how lethal that weapon may be. It offers no compromise, no objectivity, and no understanding.
We must draw the line at assault weapons due to their capacity for mass killing. If not this, soon the NRA will be fighting to legalize shoulder-launched missiles and other bigger toys. The U.S. continues to face real public safety challenges. Yet, listening to the NRA, you would think the biggest problem facing America is the inability of its citizens to own weapons even though we are the most gun-saturated nation in the world.
