Letter: Forbidding unions is discrimination

Where there is no equality, there is discrimination. I thought the idea of us, human beings, evolving from non-logical thinkers to more advanced humans, discoverers and creators of new technologies brought with it the expansion of our understanding of who we are, where we are going and what we need to do to get there. We have come a long way.

The laws, while set in stone in original times, also have evolved as evidenced by abolition, women's suffrage, interracial marriages and the end to "don't ask, don't tell." It is time now for lawmakers, law interpreters and law imposers to understand that human beings have a right to choose who they want to spend the rest of their lives with and recognize these legal unions or marriages, with all the associated rights and responsibilities. We should not be defined or judged by race, color, gender, sexual orientation, faith or political affiliation.

To deny these unions or marriages is discrimination.
