Today, our unfathomable Congress is faced with two pressing issues: Gay marriage rights and gun control.
In the aftermath of Newtown, Conn., the outrage was palpable and mostly universal. The hue and cry by the people and a majority of our legislators was for changes in gun legislation to curb the violence — and rightly so.
However, since Dec. 14, it appears that the National Rifle Association's influence has not diminished, but remarkably increased its stranglehold on our "redoubtable and courageous" Congress.
The media predicts that not only is there zero chance of banning assault weapons but a watered-down version of background checks is the only remotely possible change to gun legislation we can expect.
Equally remarkable is that members of Congress who were previously against gay marriage have suddenly, inexplicably and collectively had an epiphany and have executed a lockstep about-face on the subject.
How brave our legislators are. What an upside-down, insane world we face. We can all sleep well tonight, secure in the knowledge that our Congress is protecting the rights of gays while, by omission, giving the green light for the distinct possibility of another Newtown.
Well done, you good and faithful servants. May God forgive you, because I can't.
