Letter: Troy principal leads by example

I have had the privilege of teaching at School 2 in Troy for 2 1/2 years. As a new member to the staff, though a teacher for more than 20 years, I have witnessed and been inspired by the dedication and caring on the part of my colleagues.

Students are in the building before the first bell because, rather than leave them in the cold, kind and caring teachers and staff welcome them inside. Resources are few and needs are many. Teachers and staff demonstrate ingenuity, creativity and generosity in the educational activities and experiences they provide to engage, motivate and teach this challenging group of learners.

Tests are only one measure of academic success. Countless researchers have proven the bias in standardized tests, marginalizing performances by students of color, urban students and those in poverty (all part of School 2).

Our students are learning and achieving despite the obstacles and challenges they face. School 2 is a place where they are safe, respected, cared for and nurtured both academically and emotionally.

Recent events have painted an inaccurate and negative picture of the School 2 faculty and our principal, Linda Martin. Anyone who has visited our school and spoken with parents, students and staff know Ms. Martin has made a positive educational impact for all of School 2. She is an advocate, visionary, leader and colleague who works tirelessly and with heartfelt effort for our school and all who walk through its hallways.

May the model of Ms. Martin's leadership and the passion and student-centered advocacy of the entire School 2 staff be a benchmark and guiding force for the future.
