Letter: End the war on Indian Point

I was shocked to read Jerry Kremer's description about the state's costly war on Indian Point, and the fast-tracking of an ill-conceived contingency plan that will cost at least $811 million for New York ratepayers ("A costly war on Indian Point," Feb. 28).

We certainly don't have $811 million to throw at risky energy efficiency and transmission projects, not when our electric rates are some of the highest in the nation and not when we're trying to rebuild our economy.

Indian Point is a significant power asset, generating 11 percent of New York's power. But it is also an important economic asset, providing jobs, millions in tax revenues and greater stability for businesses.

I join Mr. Kremer in urging New York policymakers to end the campaign against Indian Point and to refocus these efforts on adding to Indian Point's power so that we can meet the state's growing demand for electricity.
