I would like to thank Thomas McCormick and his letter ("Fracking will help boost the economy," April 10) for the opportunity to point out that Sean Lennon and Yoko Ono have a farm in the Catskills (purchased by John Lennon and Yoko Ono decades ago) that would be impacted by the Constitution Pipeline, which was planned to border their farm. In addition to owning property, they have been to the areas in Pennsylvania already affected by fracking, which is why their opposition is anything but cavalier.
From Cohoes, Mr. McCormick mocks what he does not realize is their firsthand concern yet presumes to speak for the people of these towns and counties himself. I can't help but wonder whether Mr. McCormack has been to the places and spoken to the people who live where he claims that fracking "is being done safely."
There is a vast difference between vertical hydrofracking, which has been around for years, and horizontal fracking, a more recent process using a mixture of dozens of chemicals, millions of gallons of water and sand, and which is exempted from the Safe Drinking Water Act. What good is any amount of money if our water is not safe to drink, and we are exposed to toxins that could lead to increased cancer rates?
