Many thanks for the informative and well-researched article ("Toll: 8 dead, 300 injured," April 7) about pedestrian safety on Central Avenue. And thanks to the Times Union and WAMC Northeast Public Radio for the follow-up forum April 17.
The article stemming from that forum ("Steps offered for safer street crossings," April 18) was an excellent synopsis of the issues and concerns raised at the forum.
I attended the forum and was impressed with panelist Jeff Olson's depth and breadth of knowledge about making streets safe for all traffic, including pedestrians, transit users and cyclists. This discussion is timely and important in light of the number of car vs. pedestrian or cyclist accidents that result in serious injury or death.
On Wednesday, there will be a Ride and Walk of Silence in Albany to remember those pedestrians and cyclists injured or killed in encounters with cars. The intent of the Ride and Walk is to increase awareness of the need for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and transit users to share the road respectfully and responsibly.
The Ride and Walk will begin at 6 p.m. from Riverfront Park. Albany's Ride and Walk of Silence is part of an international movement to make streets accessible to and safe for all. More information is available at www.rideofsilence.org.
