Letter: Candidates need a Mideast plan

The two political nominating conventions are concluded, and I was disappointed neither candidate talked seriously and substantively about the dangerous situation in the Middle East. While the problems we face in America are serious and daunting, the situation in the Arabian peninsular cannot be ignored.

As time goes by, it is increasingly clear that the economic sanctions in which President Barack Obama put such reliance are not working. They cannot work. The Russians and the Chinese will not cooperate.

The Iranians have used the time Obama allowed them to further their nuclear program and, worse, the President changed his position. He started saying we will not tolerate a nuclear Iran but ended up stating we can allow the Iranians to further their program but not to achieve nuclear weapons. How we will know how far the program has proceeded when the nuclear inspectors aren't allowed inside, I don't know.

The threat from Iran is real and not just to the state of Israel.

So far, neither party nor the candidates has given much of a plan, program or particulars about anything that really matters to most people, but a real threat to world peace needs attention.
