A recent national news story noted most Americans are not clear on what, if any, impact the Affordable Care Act will have on their employer health insurance or on its cost. We are dedicated to helping people better understand health care reform.
Some highlights:
Most individuals who have health insurance through an employer will keep it, at least for the coming year.
Employers with 50 or more full-time equivalent employees are required to provide coverage that meets the law's minimum value and affordability standards or be subject to a penalty. Although not required to offer coverage, small employers will have new options.
People buying insurance on their own through the new Health Benefit Exchange who are eligible for Medicaid will be enrolled in that program. People whose incomes are above Medicaid eligibility, but under 400 percent of the federal poverty level, will be eligible for subsidies.
The Affordable Care Act also includes pilot programs to encourage doctors, hospitals and other medical professionals to provide more coordinated care, which will improve quality. These efforts also have the potential to better manage costs.
