Jeff Danziger's April 30 political cartoon is an insightful commentary on the unwinnable high-technology vs. low-technology terrorism conflict in which we are involved.
Drone operators sit in Syracuse and similar locations far from the impact zones, wielding the controls of the ultimate violent video game producing "regrettable operational errors" that have killed civilians too numerous to mention, including reportedly 176 children.
We refer to the perpetrators of the Boston attack as radicalized terrorists. Unlike here, the survivors of drone missile strikes have no emergency responders, medical facilities, loss of employment insurance or means of redress. They, too, consider themselves to be innocent victims of terrorists and understandably desire eye-for-an-eye justice.
Drones are killing people other than military targets in several regions of the world. Retired Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has said in television interviews that the Taliban who continue to oppose the United States will have to be killed.
Technologic superiority in killing produces opponents willing to die, not submission. If our policy is to kill all who oppose us in their homeland, then we have to expect similar efforts in return.
