A number of individuals and groups are striving to make Troy a more peaceful, just and sustainable place to live, work and play. Among them is the Troy Bike Rescue, a nonprofit collective of enthusiasts committed to removing bicycles from the waste stream and putting them back into use.
The volunteer-run and donation-funded organization offers programs and activities such as repair nights, education, sliding-scale bicycle adoption and mobile workshops.
A mobile workshop is set for the June 8 North Central Block Party. Rescue founder Andrew Lynn said the group has secured 200 helmets to be distributed to youth this summer. And, also in June, Troy Bike Rescue will collaborate with the Banda Bola Sports Foundation to contribute 10 bikes, tires, seats and parts to a village in Malawi, Africa.
The rescue's annual fundraiser is 3-11 p.m. Saturday at The Sanctuary for Independent Media, 3361 6th Ave., Troy. Admission is $10. More than 75 children's bikes will be given away. Visit http://www.troybikerescue.org/ or call 328-4827.
