Letter: Taxes much lower in other states

I found it enlightening that a $110,000 house purchased in the declining city of Gloversville carries a school and real estate tax burden of more than $5,000 ("Survey: Taxes sky-high in state," May 9). Comparatively, my relative's pending purchase of a townhome in Colorado Springs, Colo., valued at more than $140,000 will have an annual real estate tax of less than $700. That isn't a typo.

New York residents need to get their heads out of the sand and smell the tax coffee from other states. Colorado might not have all of the "services" New York has to offer, but you can afford to pay for the services you want with a tax bill that's thousands less. And, remember, those wouldn't be the services some Legislature has decided would be nice to offer while they sit back and calculate their public pensions on the days they are not being led off in handcuffs by the U.S. Attorney's office.
