Letter: Judges apply, pay for special plates

I read with interest the editorial on special license plates for judges ("End judges' license plates," May 14). While it can be perceived that special privileges can come with certain designations, it should not be an assumed conclusion.

My husband served for many years as a judge, and license plates (at least at the village and town government levels) are not given to the judge. The judge must apply for a license plate and, in order to retain that plate, must keep up membership to the New York State Magistrates Association. Also, there is an additional fee each time the registration is due for renewal (as there is for any special or vanity license plate).

There are many professional designations visible on license plates. In my opinion, they show a person's interests, accomplishments or dedication to achieve whatever that title might be.

I am not naive enough to think that certain individuals would not take advantage of their "title," and that is unfortunate. However, being elected to serve as a judge in one's community is an honor and a privilege and to suggest that such license plates should be removed is also unfortunate, especially for those individuals who are conscientious and try to do a good job dealing with very difficult situations.
