The New York State Republican Party seems to have rolled over and died. It's hard to believe that, despite all the disenchantment with the current Cuomo administration, so far not one esteemed, confident, qualified Republican has come forward as a possible candidate for the next gubernatorial election. Republican legislators might be nurturing an upcoming candidate but, if so, there's not a peep out of anyone on the matter.
If no Republican is interested, what about the Independents? Someone out there must have sincere concerns about the welfare of our once great Empire State, and strong convictions on how to fix it. If Gov. Andrew Cuomo wins a second term, New York's Republican Party will go out with a whimper unless a strong candidate emerges.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is a Republican nowadays. He would have liked another term as mayor, but it's not possible. He's got the money, the background, the ambition, and the intelligence to be a strong candidate; not a peep out of him, either, so far.
It's time for the state's Republicans to stop lollygagging, take a strong stand on the fiscal irresponsibility that's been dragging us down and sending some of our best and brightest out of the state for good.
