Gov. Andrew Cuomo was quoted in "Notable Quotes of the Week," May 12, as saying, "We need jobs in upstate New York, and economic activity in upstate New York, like we need oxygen."
This jolted my sense of reality. Maybe it's because of what I do, but to promote economic activity and job development by increasing state-sponsored gambling is penny-wise and pound-foolish.
How much money is a stable family worth? How much pain do a person and significant others have to endure because of gambling addiction to justify economic expansion? There have to be ways of creating economic development without causing personal and family dysfunction.
Why not ask "corporate America" for suggestions?
