I had a brief talk more than 20 years ago with the owner of Hoffman's Playland. I imagine he had the same conversation with other customers over the years.
He mentioned that he was considering selling the land back then. I remember saying how much the park would be missed, and I asked whether the place was losing money.
He said no, but he could get a lot more if he sold it. I made some comment that the park was a service to the public and that I would hate to see it go.
The Hoffmans have done a public service for many years and, while I will miss the park, the Hoffmans have served the community well. Thank you.
I think it unlikely they will find a buyer who will want to operate the park. Also, any new owner may not put as much effort into it. Safety was always the first concern for the Hoffmans; community service was next; the size of the profit was last.
One suggestion that I will make is whether the park is sold or not, the park could be moved to a less-expensive location. Colonie still has a lot of undeveloped land. I would rather the park be moved than dissolved.
In Rye, a much larger Playland Park has been operated by Westchester County since 1928. Could Albany County take some vacant land and buy the equipment? Perhaps Albany County could even keep the Hoffman name on the park. They could at least put up some plaque to honor the Hoffmans.
I think the Hoffmans will be as sad as anyone if the park closes completely, probably more sad than any of us.
