Letter: Safety requires better policing

While I am greatly saddened by the death of the young boy on South Pearl Street ("All was clear ... then tragedy," June 18), I am not surprised.

I have lived on Ten Broeck Street in Albany for many years and have fought with the Albany Police Department to do something about the speeding cars in this neighborhood, which hosts a children's park.

Last year, a stop sign was put up at Second Street that has helped, but police seem reluctant to enforce it because we still have cars speeding up this street with total impunity. I have requested a 5 mph sign next to the children's park, but I guess that is asking too much just to protect young lives.

In recent years, the department has put up signs in the downtown neighborhoods telling motorists that speed limits and loud noise ordinances will be enforced. Yet, blaring radios and ear-shattering motorcycles are still terrorizing city neighborhoods and these problems just continue to get worse.

There will be another tragedy in this neighborhood and then there will be much anguish and wringing of hands but, of course, it will be too late.
