Fran Bremigen in the letter "Use Harriman site to attract tourism," June 10, stated: "the ability to draw tourists would be an economic boon to this area and a great benefit to all."

Unfortunately, the letter writer forgot about the numerous Capital Region cultural attractions that already do attract tourists.

Shaker Heritage Society participates in Partners for Albany Stories, a collaboration of 11 historical and cultural organizations working together to develop and promote a comprehensive and compelling story of Albany's rich history. Each member contributes to the local economy while preserving our cultural heritage and providing educational programming.

The variety and density of events offered by these organizations (along with many others) is astonishing. Among them are the annual Albany History Fair, dozens of Museum Week and Path Through History programs, walking tours, exhibitions, lectures, concerts, and much more. Many out-of-town tourists travel to the region for these programs and more could be accommodated.

Partners for Albany Stories and other cultural organizations are experiencing tremendous financial strain due to decreasing private and public funding. Working together, we are drawing attention to the potential of Albany to become a prominent tourist destination. The last thing we need is new nonprofit attractions.

We already have a rich variety of cultural resources in the area that are offering dynamic programming. We have world-class historic sites, museums and arts organizations in addition to fabulous natural resources. These existing entities need and deserve a greater level of public and private recognition and support.
