I found the article "'Joyous passage' also seeks change," June 2, about Mary Theresa Streck to be disturbing and insulting to all those Roman Catholics who are obedient to and follow the pope, the vicar of Christ, as we as Catholics are called to do.
Ms. Streak was a former nun who did not keep her spiritual commitment to her religious order. She in turn married a former priest who could not keep his spiritual commitment to the priesthood. Now, she wants to become a priest.
She needs to study the theology of the Roman Catholic Church to understand why women are not priests. Brilliant theologians have studied for centuries, and the documentation is there.
Also, it must be clearly understood that a call to the priesthood is a spiritual call from God recognized through the official authority of the church, the papacy. Therefore, the priesthood is a gift from God and not a personal right to claim. Consequently, the priesthood is not "just a job."
Being a Catholic not only means being obedient to the pope, but also means loving your fellow Catholics and respecting them as well. If she doesn't like the theology and the tradition of the Roman Catholic Church and cannot accept its teachings, she should leave and go elsewhere and not try to undermine the faith of those of us who believe in the great Catholic tradition and teaching.
