Recently, waitresses were seen publicly lobbying Congress to raise their minimum wage. Like many, I was shocked that waitresses only make $2.13 an hour. In some states, if they make no tips, that is all they get. New York is somewhat more generous – if tips and that basic pay do not amount to the state's $7.25 minimum wage, the employer must make up the difference. Good luck.
Meanwhile, these charming servers get no health insurance, paid holidays, sick leave or pensions. Who says slavery is not dead in America?
I suggest that restaurants be required to post that $2.13 an hour minimum wage for waitresses. That would remind skinflints like me to ante up.
