Letter: Hobby Lobby reminds us of our religious heritage

Hurray for Hobby Lobby for reminding us all on July Fourth of the faith of many of our Founding Fathers and earliest presidents.

Bob Blackmon in his letter ("Hobby store ad was disrespectful," July 11) was wrong to claim the full-page list of historic quotes from George Washington, John Adams, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson and many other early American luminaries should have been "an insult" to U.S. citizens of other faiths. I expect that most of them are much more tolerant.

His tirade against Hobby Lobby was especially disturbing. He wrote that "apparently, Hobby Lobby does not believe in religious freedom," and he urged readers not to shop at Hobby Lobby stores.

While I support his freedom to express those views, does he not see his own hypocrisy in those sentiments? Hobby Lobby attacked no one. The company accurately listed a number of significant historic quotes that correctly document the religious underpinnings of the birth of this great country.

Obviously, our country has become very diverse, which is to her credit. Wonderful people from many different faiths and ethnic backgrounds live and work and raise families here. I expect all of them, including non-religious citizens, are grateful for the freedoms that are enjoyed here. We should not have to hide, deny, gloss over, or ignore the major role that theism, deism and Christianity played in forming this nation. I thank Hobby Lobby for reminding us of our religious heritage.
