Life is like a big box of crayons

What do we tell our children and grandchildren when we are asked why people are different colors?

Science tells us the differences are caused by pigment — just like the colors in a big box of crayons.

Just like crayons, we're all made of the same material, and we all add to the picture our children color of themselves and the world around them. Ever walk through a kindergarten and look at the pictures on the walls?

Most children between the ages of 3 and 6 see other children — not as a color, or as rich or poor, or whose God is better, or even a boy or girl — as someone to play and interact with, maybe even color a beautiful picture with a big box of crayons.

It takes at least a generation to remove bias from a society. No matter what your color, gender, religion, politics or social status, unless you have a medical colorblind issue, everyone experiences color. Let's have a future that's bright and multicolored, like a box of kids' crayons.
