Letter: Spitzer sorely lacks key qualities

The New York Times got it right in its July 8 editorial questioning Eliot Spitzer's return to politics. Reforms were thwarted and opportunities lost because Mr. Spitzer was not a leader but a "steamroller" who alienated his allies as well as his adversaries.

The Times Union, though it also expressed misgivings about his run for New York City comptroller ("Think again, Mr. Spitzer," July 10), gives him too much credit, describing him as a "passionately progressive politician."

His failure to work and play well with others when he was the governor and had a chance to make real changes makes it doubtful that he will be willing to work with others toward making real liberal government in the position he is now seeking.

His sexual escapades can be ignored, but his arrogance and lack of willingness to work with others are a definite problem.
