Letter: Cartoon inflames furor over verdict

After viewing the July 16 Jeff Danziger political cartoon, I feel compelled to comment that I believe it to be both offensive and inappropriate. The picture depicts an Uncle Sam figure, with his back turned to the viewer, holding what is a steaming, seemingly malodorous state of Florida with the words "Florida Justice" in regard to the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial.

Obviously, these pages are given to opinion, but they are also a public forum, and it seems Mr. Danziger disregards that this case was decided by a jury, presumably under great stress, based on the facts presented during the trial. It seems to me that, although it concerned tragic events, and not everyone could be happy with the outcome, the process functioned fairly, and everyone involved got to present their cases.

So, regarding Mr. Danziger, what exactly is he trying to do? Inflame? Suggest that because he doesn't like the verdict, it should be thrown out along with the state of Florida?

According to news reports, the defendant, his family and attorneys are receiving death threats. How does this cartoon contribute to any meaningful or peaceful dialogue? I think that it does not.
