This calvacade of scandalous politicians has got to end

The following is from an editorial in the San Jose Mercury News:

Anthony Weiner, stop acting like your name. And we don't mean "Carlos Danger," the nom de 'net that apparently attracts starry-eyed romantics online. That, and genital snapshots.

Elliot Spitzer — forget it. You had to quit as governor because of hiring prostitutes, which is, besides being icky, illegal. Why should New York City pick you as comptroller?

And San Diego Mayor Bob Filner? Whoa, didn't see that coming.

Until the 70-year-old Filner joined this summer's parade of sleazeball politicians admitting to serial degrading of women, we hoped this latest outbreak was an East Coast thing. But no, Filner apparently has cornered, groped and otherwise demeaned a variety of women, seven of whom have come forward so far. We particularly love the retired Navy rear admiral's story. Way to pick 'em, Mayor.

Friday Filner said he was checking into a clinic for treatment. He should resign. How can he work with women after this? And Weiner and Spitzer should quit their candidacies in New York City.

Weiner has enriched the New York City mayor's race with an infinite supply of off-color tabloid headlines and the interesting political strategy of not bothering to stop lewd behavior after it's disclosed. (What's up with his wife anyway? Still standing by him? Girl, we need to talk.)

Philandering politicians are not new, and many survive extramarital affairs. But the brazenness of these guys takes it to a new level.Weiner says his personal conduct is irrelevant. Wrong. Public officials need good judgment — and respect for the opposite sex. Weiner and Filner are zeroes on those counts. As to Spitzer, we don't know what he's been up to lately. And we don't want to know. Enough!
