The initiative process is the ultimate expression of free markets. It allows citizens with common interests to freely unite to put vital issues on the ballot for voters to freely choose between alternatives that politicians oppose or refuse to consider. The vast majority of corporations and unions also oppose the initiative process because they effectively control governments. Until recently, Gov. Andrew Cuomo had an approval rating above 70 percent, but he, too, has drastically shut down the free flow of information. That is another reason for ballot initiatives.
