O'Keeffe exhibit at Hyde deserves more exposure

I am writing in response to the coverage given "Modern Nature: Georgia O'Keeffe and Lake George" at The Hyde Collection, Glens Falls ("Lake inspiration," July 28).

This stunning exhibition is what is known in the art world as a blockbuster, drawing hundreds of visitors daily, breaking all attendance records at the museum.

I feel the Times Union, both in the under-placement of the story and in the lack of any credit awarded to either the museum or the exhibition's curator, Erin B. Coe, is stunning in the extreme.

This exhibition was organized, based entirely on a premise from Coe, who is also the Hyde's chief curator, that a first intimate examination of the renowned O'Keeffe's work from her time at Lake George and the inspiration drawn by her from its environment was warranted.

Major American museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, agreed, granting loans for works, some never before seen or loaned. Further validation was given when the Georgia O'Keeffe (Sante Fe) Museum itself, as co-organizer, booked the exhibition following its showing here.

The de Young Museum of the Fire Arts Museums of San Francisco then will have it. Besides the under-placement and the lack of credit to the curator, no mention was made of this nor the 200-page hardcover catalog, with scholarly essays.

I feel the Times Union really missed the boat. Thankfully, the prestigious New York Times has not, as they have sent both an art critic and photographer for a story for its Arts section.
