Letter: Picture of 5-year-old on life support appalling

I don't believe I've ever written a letter to the editor of any newspaper, but today I'm making an exception. The Times Union's decision to print the picture of 5-year-old Gary Carpenter III on life support on the front page is disturbing to me, particularly in light of the fact that he didn't survive the beatings ("Child's beating death raises questions," July 28).

I did not, do not and will never comprehend the purpose of printing this picture at all, and so high on the front page — except to sell newspapers. Reading this tiny boy's "hotline history" was graphic enough; the point was well made.

I hope the Times Union is proud of itself for the manner in which it publicized this "exclusive" story. Please rethink any future plans for more of this kind of sensationalism.
