Letter: Give veterans proven relief

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has just signed a medical marijuana bill into law. That means veterans who suffer from a number of debilitating illnesses, due to their service in combat, will have a cheap and legal means to this proven therapy.

In many states, because of their enlightened legislatures, the Veterans Administration is able to write prescriptions for the drug although they do not dispense it.

So, what about the veterans in New York? Why are they treated like second-class citizens with no legal access to this product that gives great comfort and relief?

New York used to be the leader in progressive legislation but that has changed over the years. Because our legislators are the recipients of big contributions from the pharmaceutical industry, New York veterans must go without this help.

Why are the veterans, who could be helped with this inexpensive drug that has few side effects, subjected to the whims of politicians who seem to believe they have medical degrees?

Everyone loves the vets until it is time to take care of them. Then their needs are subjected to the cuts forced by sequestration and budget constraints.
