Letter: Compare salaries of college chiefs

Daniel J. Kelly's comments about Robert Jones being paid $555,000 as the new University of Albany president are interesting ("UAlbany chief's salary outrageous," Oct. 5).

Presidential salaries are one of many factors that have some U.S. students graduating from college with a quarter-million-dollar debt. Some of us who have spent a large part of our productive life in academia believe this to be a cardinal sin. As a dynamic democracy, we must find a way to correct this inappropriate penalty.

However, I would like to remind Mr. Kelly that President Shirley Ann Jackson, across the river at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, is paid $2.3 million per year.

Perhaps comparison of the Jones and Jackson salaries is a clear indication of the excellent value of a State University education compared with that of some private institutions.
