I want to share a long overdue "bravo" to the Feminists Choosing Life of New York Action for its "New York State of Embarrassment" billboard placed on Interstate 90. The anti-abortion message to Gov. Andrew Cuomo was powerful.
Abortions were intended to be rare and performed only in cases of rape, incest or where there is a severe risk to the health of the mother or baby. In New York, embarrassingly the abortion capital of the United States, the latest reported statistics show that 102,678 abortions were performed in 2011. Did our state truly have a preponderance of such cases to warrant such a high number of abortions?
The Supreme Court justices, in passing Roe vs. Wade, clearly stated they could not establish when "personhood" occurs. If established, the abortion issue would collapse and the "person" would be protected by the 14th Amendment.
In fact, science and technology have progressed greatly since that ruling. We now know a heartbeat can be detected at five to six weeks. Isn't a beating heart "personhood" enough?
