Letter: Time to enforce Buster's Law

The article "Dog abuser slips out of his short leash," Aug. 21, made me ill.

But Anthony Walker, the 30-year-old Albany man who was sentenced to six months in jail and five years' probation for violating Buster's Law, is not the lone guilty party. Albany County District Attorney David Soares and lawmakers produce nothing but noise.

Mr. Soares had agreed to Mr. Walker getting less jail time than the maximum two years allowed under Buster's Law in a plea agreement in which Mr. Walker was banned from owning animals for five years. But despite the ban, a judge allowed him to live in the same house as a dog.

When considering any candidate for public office, voters should remember how rare is the politician who, instead of talking the talk, actually creates a paradigm that benefits the electorate. To date, that's rarer than the Karner blue butterfly.

My dog is far more than a pet; she's a close companion. If someone ever tried to harm my dog in the way Mr. Walker did, I would be put away for a long time.

The current Buster's Law is simply lip service of no value.
