Scott Waldman's recent column ("What is twerking? Bet your child knows," Aug. 30) on Miley Cyrus' performance at the MTV Video Music Awards was a bit too female-sided. Much negative commentary on the upcoming generation focuses on the females, from how they dress to how they act. Why have we forgotten the males? If we are to comment on the generation, comment on all of them. Look at the males in the twerking video mentioned; one could comment on their laissez-faire attitude to the over-sexualization of the girls.
This kind of commentary perpetuates society's negative view of females, placing the blame on them even when they are the victims. Parents, teach your children good morals and values, but don't demean and belittle others in the process.
I agree with Mr. Waldman that this was not a classy performance, but this shaming is completely inappropriate.
