Thank you for printing "Earth nears 'tipping point,'" Sept. 3. In doing so, the Times Union is helping to break a long-standing taboo against reporting on human overpopulation. The article discusses the urgency ("in less than a lifetime, the world population has tripled...") and the solution ("it would cost $4.1 billion a year ... to provide birth control to all 222 million women in the world who want [it]"). Such a tiny investment to save the planet. What is standing in the way? The "taboo." Our leaders won't discuss it until we do or until it starts appearing in the media.
