Priest Gary J. Mercure has been accused of molesting one child several times in Vermont. He was convicted of molesting two children in Massachusetts. However, he is accused of molesting several children, time and time again, in New York ("Judge rejects diocese appeal," Sept. 8).
Why does Father Mercure face legal action in other states but not New York? That's because New York's predator-friendly statute of limitations imposes time limits on men and women who were sexually assaulted as children.
We hope New York legislators feel ashamed that a notorious predator priest escapes responsibility for his heinous crimes in his home state. We hope lawmakers will remedy this injustice by reforming New York's outdated laws that protect predators instead of protecting children.
